Jackie Helvey Week!

Hooray for Jackie, WCOM's own host of Friday night's 6 PM West End Report on the Arts!

By unanimous vote, the Carrboro Board of Alderman, in recognition of Jackie Helvey's immense and tireless commitment to the Arts in Carrboro, declared the first week in May to be Jackie Helvey Week.  The Carrboro Arts Committee presented her with a beautiful sculpture by Mike Roig to commemorate the event.  Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton said this is the first time in his memory they have ever named a week after anyone.  WCOM is just plain lucky to be one of the many endeavors around town to which Jackie brings her talent and dedication.  Yahoo!  Congratulations, Jackie!  Find out more about Carrboro and about Jackie here.

In the Beginning...

Our first on-air broadcasts five years ago were two "info-mercials", one in English, one in Spanish, telling our new listeners what we were about. We didn't have a studio yet, so these broadcasts came from a CD player at our transmitter site (at Scroggs Elementary), playing on a loop to fulfill the FCC requirements for being "on the air". They were pretty entertaining, still are! Listen to the English version, relive those days of yesteryear:
