Free Software crucial to competition, regulators in Novell patent deal say

Competition authorities in Germany and the United States today highlighted the fundamental role that Free Software plays for competition in the software market. After several months of discussions, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the German Federal Competition Office (FCO) have allowed a consortium of Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and EMC to acquire 882 patents from Novell only subject to conditions clearly intended to prevent their use against Free Software players.

Novell's patent sale: FSFE's input to competition authorities

On April 6, FSFE provided the German competition authorities with its views on the sale of Novell's patents to CPTN, a joint venture of Microsoft, Apple, EMC and Oracle. According to the German authorities, the terms of the sale have been slightly modified since we registered our concerns with them on December 22, 2010. Despite these modifications, the transfer of a substantial number of patents to firms with a history of using them against Free Software remains a worrying prospect. Fellowship Meeting in Augsburg

30 April

On Saturday 30.04.11 (NOT 23.04. as first announced) at 19:00 the first Fellowship meeting in Augsburg will take place, and you're very welcome to the event! The meeting will be held in the Café Bistro Bismarck, Bismarckstr. 7, 86159 Augsburg. There is no fixed program but many ideas and topics to discuss! We simply want to get together and chat about Free Software.

Berlin "Fellowship meeting" @LinuxTag

FSFE will have a stand at the LinuxTag in Berlin. Of course, everyone is invited to meet us at the booth and have a chat. Furthermore, on Thursday evening, May the 12th, we invite everyone to join us around 7 p.m. to go eat or drink something all together. This will be our Fellowship meeting for May.
